After graduating from Bryant, Joyce worked as a Buyer at General Dynamics, specializing in the procurement of packaging supplies, computers, software, and office supplies and equipment as well as tools used on the production floor.
In 1996, Joyce started working as an adjunct faculty member at Katharine Gibbs School. In 2003, she began working full time at Gibbs, and in 2004, she was promoted to Lead Instructor of the Office Administration Department as well as taught course such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office Procedures, and various other business courses. She also served as the Internship Coordinator for Office Administration students assisting them with providing internship sites.
Upon the announcement of the closing of Gibbs College, she obtained a position at New Horizons Computer Learning Center, where she developed and taught the curriculum for the Office Administration (Medical, Executive, and Legal) Programs. She then went on to The Salter School, in Fall River, where she taught Business English, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Career Development.
In 2008, Joyce started her own training company called Tailor-Made Training, where she provides on-site training on a one-on-one basis to students. Her students include students from the Office of Rehabilitation Services and the Department of Labor & Training, where she has helped students both unemployed and with disabilities gain the necessary skills to return to the workforce. She also assists them with interview skills and helps in placement assistance in finding employment.
With 20 years’ experience in the medical field as an Office Manager, Debra also has 20 years’ experience developing curriculum and teaching Medical Billing & Coding, as well as Medical Office Administration and Professional Office Administration.
Her career started as at Roger Williams General Hospital as a medical transcriptionist in the Radiology Department. She later moved on to a private radiology facility, RI Medical Imagining (formerly Ray Medical), which had multiple office sites. Here she was involved in not only doing transcription but also working in all functions of the office which included appointment scheduling, patient registration, and medical billing and coding. Debra was promoted to supervisor of the secretarial team which involved training of new staff and helping new physicians become acclimated with office functions. She created and developed centralized transcription and appointment scheduling departments for the facility which produced more efficiency for the practice and referring physicians. As the practice grew, her title changed to office manager.
Her love for training staff prompted her to seek a teaching position at Katharine Gibbs School for the new program of Medical Office Administration. She worked as an adjunct instructor teaching medical transcription until a full-time position became available and she was able to teach all aspects of the program which included medical billing and coding, office procedures, practice management software (Medical Manager) and later EHR software.
Upon the announcement of the closing of Gibbs, she obtained a position at MTTI, where she developed and taught the curriculum for the new program for Medical & Dental Office Management. While teaching at MTTI, a position became available for a Program Director at Sanford Brown Institute. She accepted this position which gave her the opportunity to apply her management skills to run the Medical Billing & Coding program at this institution. She remained at Sanford Brown until the corporation owning the school decided to close all schools in the northeast area of the country.
Debra joined Tailor-Made Training, LLC. in 2014, where she can remain teaching students the skills necessary to begin their career in their chosen field. Her main goal when instructing students is to provide them with a comfortable learning environment to achieve the knowledge and success they need to succeed.
Along with her medical experience, Debra is well-versed in teaching Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and QuickBooks. She is a Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) through the American Medical Billing Association, a Registered Medical Coder (RMC) through the Medical Management Institute, a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and a Certified Professional Coding Instructure (CPC-I) through the American Academy of Professional Coder.
